Case Study: DUNEDIN MIDWiNTER CARNIVAL 2024

Dunedin’s Midwinter Carnival is always a highlight on the calendar every year. An event that is unique to Dunedin, our team were thrilled to be back for another year, once again providing all things production; from sound & lighting, to projection & theming.

At Gravity Events, we thrive on projects that showcase our creativity, and the annual Dunedin Midwinter Carnival is a perfect example. The 2024 theme, “Creatures of the Deep,” offered an immersive experience, celebrating Dunedin’s artistic talent with lantern displays, aerial performances, food stalls, live music, and stunning projections on the First Church Otago.

Transforming Dunedin's Iconic Architecture

As visitors arrived, they were welcomed by vibrant artistic installations illuminated by our battery-powered RGBW outdoor PAR lights, eliminating the need for cumbersome cables. The grandeur of First Church was highlighted by our 180W IP65 RGBW lights, creating a captivating visual experience. The scent of delicious food and the moody sounds from our RCF active speakers drew guests into the heart of this family-focused event. Our popular LED/Light up trees provided a perfect selfie spot, enhancing the festive atmosphere.

Engaging Entertainment and Stunning Visuals

Long queues formed for the musical entertainment, where our audio engineers ensured the hall was alive with sound. The 4m square LED/Light up dance floor became the focal point and stage within Burns Hall, with performers and guests alike enjoying the dynamic setup. Our Panasonic PT-RQ22K 21,000-lumen projectors created breathtaking underwater visuals on the First Church’s architecture. The stunning underwater visuals prepared by Daniel Aston cleverly utilised the features of the church with the mind-bending 3D capabilities offered by projection mapping to transform the 3D space. Inside our discreet marquee, our team managed the media computer and projection mapping. Our Chauvet Outcast moving head lights drew the eyes of the crowd to an amazing performance high in the trees - an incredible aerial performance by Brophy Aerials.

Adapting and Exceeding Expectations

At Gravity Events, it’s not just about having top-notch equipment; it’s about using it to bring your vision to life. We continuously adapt to ensure every detail exceeds expectations. For the Midwinter Carnival, we responded to changing weather and improved the boat area’s popularity by adding Chauvet Cloud 9 low foggers and City Wash 60x15W architectural LED washes, engaging long queues and enhancing the overall experience.

Comprehensive Event Solutions

What sets us apart is our ability to manage every aspect of your event seamlessly. From extensive lighting setups and live PA gear to intricate projection mapping, we handle it all. Supplying power to the site and especially the power-hungry food trucks feeding the starving crowds is something that the event organisers never have to worry about.

Part of the magic that we bring to the event is that the organisers and artists get to focus on delivering their vision and we just make it all happen, often invisibly!

Once again, a huge shout out to the awesome team at Midwinter Carnival for another awesome community event in Ōtepoti Dunedin!
