Case Study: Ngā Kapa Haka Kura Tuarua o Aotearoa // Gravity Events Nelson

With the Secondary school Kapa Haka returning to the national stage for the first time since 2018. 43 groups from 15 Rohe around Aotearoa will battle it out at Nelson’s Trafalgar Centre during Matariki, showcasing their unique performances and compositions. Te Tauihu o te Waka a Māui Māori Culture Council approached Gravity Events Nelson to provide the technical support for the on-going Ngā Kapa Haka Tuarua o Aotearoa in Whakatu. 


Comprehensive Audio and Visual Equipment for Ngā Kapa Haka Tuarua o Aotearoa

At Gravity Events Nelson, we understand the importance of delivering flawless technical support for high-profile events. For the prestigious Ngā Kapa Haka Tuarua o Aotearoa, our team provided a comprehensive range of state-of-the-art equipment to ensure an exceptional experience for both participants and audience.

Advanced Sound System: With strict criteria around sound levels to provide a fair, balanced event for participants Gravity Events Nelson provided:

  • Main PA: Two flown RCF HDL-30A Line Arrays, comprising 8 boxes in total

  • Side-fill Arrays: Two DBtech DVA T8 Line Arrays for enhanced sound distribution

  • Subwoofers: Four RCF 9006-AS (Dual 18") Subwoofers, complemented by four DBtech VIO X10 speakers for powerful low-end and front fill

  • A Midas M32 with Midas DL32 Digital Stage box provided the control for the Audio system via an  8 way CAT 6 snake. The hanging microphones consist of Rode M5 microphones and Sennheiser MKE600 shotguns on stands along the front edge of the stage which captured the audio from the Kapa Haka groups.

Cutting-Edge Vision: Our vision package was designed to deliver stunning visuals and seamless broadcast integration:

  • Switcher: Blackmagic Design ATEM 2 M/E Constellation HD with ATEM Advanced Panel 10

  • Projection: Panasonic PT-RZ120 Laser Projector (12,000 Lumens)

  • Screen: A 6.46m x 4.04m Rear Projection Screen was flown beside the stage to broadcast Māori Television’s feed to the audience

  • Ensuring that no one missed out on the action, we equipped the venue with:

    • TV Displays: Multiple 55” and 75” TVs for program feeds from Māori Television

    • Outdoor Screen: A 3.5m x 2m Absen PL4.8 LED Screen, strategically positioned outside the Trafalgar Centre

Expansive Stage Setup For the stage, we constructed a sizable setup measuring 20 meters wide, 15 meters deep, and 600mm high. This included:

  • Stage Decks: 300 Eurotruss Pro stage decks (2m x 1m each) covered with grey carpet tiles to reduce foot traffic noise

  • Egress: Ramps on either side for easy access

Dynamic Stage Lighting: To enhance the stage's visual appeal, we provided a range of lighting options:

  • Stage Wash: 16x Ovation F-265WW LED Fresnel lights

  • Additional Lighting: 24x Chauvet Slimpar Pro H (RGBWA-UV) and 12x Chauvet Rogue R2X Wash lights

  • Additional Audio-Visual Support
